Stunning vintage Wilkes active bass guitar from the early 1980’s
This is a fabulous example of Doug Wilkes’s work from the 80s. The bass is very high-end in both its build and sound quality, with the highest quality hardware, and beautiful touches like hand-carved wooden pickup covers.
The condition is really quite stunning for a 30+ year old instrument, with just the odd very small mark and lacquer crack. The gold hardware has held up well, the only real tarnishing being on the neck plate.
Not certain what the body wood is, but it has a very cool orange sunburst finish.
The bridge is a Schaller roller type, and the tuners are gold Schaller too.
The Wilkes pre-amp sounds fantastic. Controls are – 3-way pickup switch; Volume; Pickup Balance; Bass Cut/Boost & Treble Cut/Boost.
I’ve just spent the morning setting up and servicing the bass and it’s got a lovely low action. The maple fingerboard and neck look gorgeous – very shiny, and the frets have minimal wear.
To cap it off, the bass comes with the original ‘period’ flight case which was purchased from the same shop as the bass. I can only assume the bass has lived in this case from day 1, hence the lovely condition.
